There is much literature out there describing the obstacles and shortcomings of female entrepreneurship but we’re a positive bunch here at WOD and want to highlight the more important side of this shift. This is, that things are changing and women are increasingly gaining access to the funding they need to get started as well as joining forces to support each other in the absence of institutional change.
Not only is entrepreneurship seen as a way of driving economic growth, creating jobs and contributing to social stability, there is also evidence that female entrepreneurs out earn male counterparts. That's right - reverse income disparity. This is attributed to many factors one being women's desire for sustainable growth. So, are we risk averse or not interested in growth? Nope, we just like it slow and steady. Research has also discovered that the performance of female-led startups is markedly worse than that of male-led startups. However, this gender gap disappears if they’re financed by VCs with female general partners. When women fund women there is a greater range of success because we just get it and want to give each other more opportunity. One of the biggest obstacles women face when getting started, scaling up or keeping up with everyday life is the confidence to take the plunge. The best way to overcome this is to utilize your support network. This is what women really do best. We collaborate, we support, we nurture and we love.
