There's a lot of information out there about the concept of personal branding, so for many people it can still be tough to know exactly what to do to build an effective brand.

The most important thing to understand is that your brand is the combination of everything people know about you and it leads them to an assumption about your value. Your value is a representation of what you can do or provide to others. It's what they come to you for help with.

Step 1 for building a personal brand:

The first and most important step in developing a brand for yourself is determining what you can help others with. This is your personal value statement. To figure this one out, it helps to write it in the form of an "I help" statement such as the ones below.

Executive Assistant
I help busy executives focus on what's most important, so they can be more effective at running their business.

Life Coach
I help people discover what they truly value, so they can live a more fulfilling, engaging, and inspiring life.

To create an "I help" statement like these just answer these questions:
  1. Who do you help?
  2. What do you help them accomplish?
  3. How does that impact their life?

Step 2 for building a personal brand:
After you have articulated the value you provide it's time to determine how you're going to share that value with others. How will people learn about the incredible gifts you have? Here are some tips for how you can share your value and build your reputation.
  • Join a Networking Organization: The best way to build a reputation for your personal brand is by sharing your expertise with people in person. By joining a networking organization, you'll ensure that you're more likely to see some of the same people on a regular basis. The more you engage with them and share your value, you increase the likelihood they will tell others about you.
  • Start Blogging: Not everyone enjoys the process of blogging, but by writing about your area of expertise you teach people to rely on you for that information. When you show consistency in the frequency of your blogs, people will trust you as a resource and therefore remember you when someone ask for help related to your area of expertise.
  • Find Speaking Engagements: Being in the position of an expert gives you instant credibility, so when you have a speaking engagement the power of sharing your value is magnified even more.

Step 3 for building a personal brand:
The final step in building a strong personal brand is consistency. It takes time for people to begin to recognize you for your value. They'll need to be reminded of it repeatedly for a period of time before they'll take action on that knowledge, but the results are worth the wait.

What are the benefits of branding yourself?
  • You'll be more likely to be recommended for a job when you aren't actively applying.
  • Potential customers will come to you and already know the incredible value you can offer them.
  • People will introduce you to others who need what you have to offer, which means even more opportunities for you!

What's your personal brand? Tell me about your unique value in the comments below.
