Networking, whether you love it or hate it, there is always room for improvement in the way we approach an event. And, just like an exam, the more prepared you are the more confident you’ll feel.
This week on Inside the Women of Denver we tackle the top 3 networking mistakes that people make and how these can be avoided. Networking expert Penny Brenden, owner of The Connecting Experts, shares her tips on how to work the room and exit with your goals achieved.
The first mistake being that you show up with no goals at all. You just show up. Penny explains that you must show up with intention, having done some research and put some thought into who it is you want to meet.
Second is the tendency toward verbal vomit. Rather than planning you message you spout out all about your business without thinking strategically about what it is you want to say first. The trick is to work your message into the conversation rather than recite your elevator speech.
Finally, asking the question “What do you do?”. Remember, it’s a conversation. Penny suggests asking something more like, “ Is this your first time here?”
